Nothing learned is ever wasted - NVu and IT

Well, today my head is spinning because I've had my head deep in books about my computer's operating system. (Mac OS X Tiger!) and on web typesetting, web design, and html.

Yes, I am determined to have a basic knowledge of the above so I can sort out my web page and edit it myself.

That said, I would also be happy to be an intelligent customer of a web designer. Anyone who wants to do a skill swap to exchange life/creativity/time management coaching for web designing please e-mail me!

At the moment, my site is very basic. Click this link and you'll see what I mean:liketothelark.com

I've used Apple's dotmac templates, and they're not flexible enough for my purposes. So, I've investigated other options, and am currently teaching myself on the open-source software program NVu, which you can find here: NVu

I know there are a lot of tricky bits to take into account when web programming (e.g. making it accessible to screen readers/fonts and colours which aren't visible in different browsers) but I'm trying to keep it simple.

On the plus side, I get the basic idea behind html programming, and have managed to include links to 2 websites in this blog. So there's progress. My grade "1" in Sixth Form Certificate Computer Studies is kind of coming in handy. Html has some similarities to BBC Basic, even if my digital camera has twice the memory of the machines I was programming on then.

The book on web typesetting also seems particularly interesting - nice and visual. The stuff on fonts extends some stuff I was taught on an editing course I did, at a time I thought I might want to be an editor.

So all in all, today is proof of the old adage "nothing learned is ever wasted"!
